Small tasks, big impact: 4 ways volunteers can make a big difference at the Safe Shelter

Posted Friday August 21, 2026

At The Crisis Center, Inc., we operate a safe shelter that provides a secure refuge for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, along with their children. Ensuring safety is our top priority and the shelter's location is kept confidential to protect all residents.

Such an operation takes a serious commitment from the dedicated staff who work and interact with shelter residents everyday. It can also be rewarding as a volunteer.

Here are 4 unique ways you can a big impact for residents and staff this fall.

* Lawn care and yard maintenance
If you've got a green thumb, we want to talk! Because of the moisture, our grass has been growing fast and it's not always easy for shelter staff to keep up. This is one of the top areas where volunteers are needed. Once trained, if you like mowing the lawn, pulling weeds and watering flowers, we can put you to work right away. Morning or evening hours preferred.

* Kitchen help
Once you've completed our thorough volunteer training, there's always room for inspiration in the kitchencould always use ideas for meals. Help us prepare a weekly menu for shelter residents or if inspired, help cook and serve a meal once a week.

* Transportation
One of the biggest challenges for a lot of people in our community is transportation. If you've got wheels, we can use help transporting residents to appointments and picking up donations. Must be insured and have a good driving record.

* Handywork
Do you like to fix things? Maybe you're good with a hammer or paintbrush or just enjoy putting things together. Whatever the case may be, sometimes odd things around the shelter need to be repaired. It's a great way to give back.

Volunteer applications are being accepted now. There are many ways to give back. It's a great opportunity for incoming students at Kansas State University, recent retirees or just anyone with some free time that wants to support victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
